Pierre was a wealthy magnate who got most of his riches from the tobacco industry, and lived in a close knit residential colony called the Tuxedo Park. The park was a piece of land that his community acquired from an Indian tribe called the Algonquin. Coming from a family which penetrated the highest social circles during those times, Pierre helped establish Tuxedo Park as an exclusively elite fishing and hunting destination. This resulted to the development of a high profile resort and residence and the formal establishment of the “Tuxedo Club”

The Tuxedo Park thus became a high profile residence and resort for the world’s rich and famous. As expected, an extravagant social scene soon followed. Tuxedo Park’s residents and regular guests even established their own social organization called the Tuxedo Club. The club had its first ball in October of 1886, which then featured men sporting long tailcoats and a white tie. However, to the shock of many, Pierre commissioned a black jacket which had no tail. This led to the birth of what we now know as the tuxedo jacket.

This is perhaps the reason why of all the clothing items in the world, this jacket is arguably the most dynamic. It was invented to defy convention and challenge the fashion norms. To date, it is worn not only in formal events, but also in everyday life. It can be partnered with almost anything – from expensive shirts and hand woven ties to casual tees with jeans and sneakers.
